HEALTH CARE AIDE PROGRAM
The Health Care Aide Program is designed to equip graduates with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to effectively work as Health Care Aides in different settings. Specific objectives are: 1) to equip students with the basic knowledge and understanding of human anatomy and physiology to facilitate working with patients and other health care professional; 2) to ensure that graduates understand and appreciate the interactions between human, cultural/social and ethical issues in health care delivery; 3) to equip graduates with all the practical skill sets needed to effectively execute all tasks performed by Health Care Aides; and 4) to ensure that graduates are able to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues alike and be able to do so both verbally and in writing.
The program is offered over a 21-week period during which students must complete 22 credit hours of classroom instruction plus 6 credit hours of clinical practicum for a total of 28 Program Credit Hours.

Course Descriptions
HCA 100 Health Care System and Health Care Delivery – 30 hrs
Students gain understanding of the main roles and responsibilities of a health aide professional including providing compassionate care, getting involved in home care delivery, and how to ethically discharge their duties while respecting the rights of their clients. Gain an appreciation of the Manitoba health care system.
HCA 101 Activities of Daily Living I – Home Management – 42 hrs
Using classroom instructions and laboratory exercise, this course equips the students with knowledge and skills to assist clients with daily activities including nutrition (meal preparation), feeding, mobility, managing a home, hygiene and grooming.
HCA 102 Activities of Daily Living II – The Human Body – 55 hrs
Provides students with the basic knowledge of the structure and function of the different systems (e.g. circulation, respiration, and digestion) of the human body. This forms the basis for developing the skills required to assist clients with such activities of daily living as bowel elimination, mobility, and use of assistive devices.
HCA 103 Growth and Development – 15 hrs
Students will understand the normal stages of human growth and development and the key developmental changes that occur at each stage and the role the individual plays at each stage.
HCA 104 Safety in Health Care Settings – 35 hrs
Gain knowledge on medical asepsis and the skills required to control infections and prevent the spread of diseases (e.g. hand washing, safe use of personal protective equipment, fire safety, WHIMS). Know how to identify the risk factors for accidents and unsafe situations and how to respond in case of an emergency.
HCA 105 Caring for Clients in the Community – 20 hrs
Learn the skills you will need to provide effective care to clients in a home and community settings. Explore the services provided by the various agencies that provide services to clients in these settings and how to function successfully as a home support worker.
HCA 106 Human Issues and Interpersonal Interactions – 38 hrs
Examine concepts related to sexuality, religious and cultural practices, abuse, and stressful situations and how they impact on health and health care delivery. Learn the skills needed to provide care to clients from different backgrounds and beliefs and recognize and deal with situations of abuse.
HCA 107 Communication and Documentation – 20 hrs
Acquire skills to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients, including recognizing and dealing with an angry client. Learn how to contribute to the health care plan by making and documenting observations correctly and accurately and the methods used in different health care delivery settings.
HCA 108 Introduction to Gerontology – 40 hrs
Provides the students with a basic understanding of the process of aging and its effects on the individual, family members, and the greater society. Changes in health, social, political, and economic status of the individual that often accompany aging are discussed.
HCA 109 Caring for Clients in Long-Term Care Facilities – 40 hrs
The services provided by long-term care facilities and the common health conditions in these facilities are reviewed and the roles and responsibilities of a health care aide in such settings are discussed. Know how to recognize the needs and provide support to the dying client and their family and become familiar with the goals of palliative care. Develop communication and management strategies to effectively care for clients with cognitive impairment.
HCA 110 Health Care Skills Lab – 50 hrs
Designed to provide students with ample opportunity to gain exposure and the confidence required in carrying out the various skills covered in the course prior to starting the clinical practicum. Examples of skills covered includes, feeding, bed making, proper hand washing techniques, gloving, client transfers, ambulation, eye and glasses care, mouth and denture care, bathing, toileting, range of motion exercises, etc.
HCA 111 Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training – 10 hrs
Allows students to develop the confidence needed to deal with and manage disruptive behavior and potentially violent situations in a safe and non-confrontational manner. The training is delivered in a workshop setting using training resources development by WRHA.
HCA 112 First AID / CPR Training – 8 hrs
Delivered in a workshop setting designed for students to obtain First AID Certificate and CPR-Basic Rescuer certification.
HCA 113 Clinical (Work) Practicum – 240 hrs
Designed to provide students, who have successfully completed the theory part of the course, with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills gained in a work place setting. Students work alongside an experienced health care aide under the overall supervision of the course instructor within the normal working structure of the facility. Participation in clinical (work) practicum requires that each student have a CPR-Basic Rescuer certification and up to date immunization. Also, students must submit an Adult Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector (ACRVS) check and a Provincial Abuse Registry (PCAR) check obtained within six months of starting clinical practicum.
